SingTel mobile users top 124 million

Singapore Telecommunications said Tuesday its mobile subscribers grew by a record 12 million in the first quarter to top 124 million users at the end of March, the largest such base in Asia outside of China. A remarkable achievement for a country that has a population less than 4.5 million with very small land mass and virtually no natural resources. A nation which was formerly part of Malaysia and due to different political views was separated from Malaysia.

The increase was driven by SingTel's regional mobile associates especially in India and Indonesia where the fast growing markets have further scope to expand. Apart from Bharti and Telkomsel, SingTel has stakes in Thailand's Advanced Info Service, Globe Telecom in the Philippines, Singtel Optus in Australia and Pacific Bangladesh Telecom.

While size of market does matter like the chinese and indian market, but Singapore's Singtel had proved beyond reasonable doubt that a visionary and well managed telco can go far too. Expect to hear more good news and financial results from Singtel. Singtel is truly a class above others. Well done. Let me know what you think.
