Rules of Life and Money according to Warren Buffet

I think some of you may had read this before but its great to read it and be reminded again. I personally find Warren Buffet, the second richest man who has donated $31 billion to charity, a man with great integrity and there are so much that we can learn from him. Below are some of the interesting aspects of his life that was gathered during an interview on CNBC.

1. He bought his first share at age 11 and he now regrets that he started too late!
2. He bought a small farm at age 14 with savings from delivering newspapers.
3. He still lives in the same small 3-bedroom house in mid-town Omaha, that he bought after he
got married 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house. His house does not have a wall or a fence.
4. He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him.
5. He never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company.
6. His company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns 63 companies. He writes only one letter each year to the CEOs of these companies, giving them goals for the year. He never holds meetings or calls them on a regular basis. He has given his CEO's only two rules :-
- Rule number 1: do not lose any of your share holder's money.
- Rule number 2: Do not forget rule number 1.
7. He does not socialize with the high society crowd. His past time after he gets home is to make himself some pop corn and watch Television.
8. Bill Gates, the world's richest man met him for the first time only 5 years ago. Bill Gates did not think he had anything in common with Warren Buffet. So he had scheduled his meeting only for half hour. But when Gates met him, the meeting lasted for ten hours and Bill Gates became a devotee of Warren Buffet.
9. Warren Buffet does not carry a cell phone, nor has a computer on his desk. His advice to young people: "Stay away from credit cards and invest in yourself and Remember:-
A. Money doesn't create man but it is the man who created money.
B. Live your life as simple as you are.
C. Don't do what others say, just listen them, but do what you feel good.
D. Don't go on brand name; just wear those things in which u feel comfortable.
E. Don't waste your money on unnecessary things; just spend on them who really in need rather.
F. After all it's your life then why give chance to others to rule our life."

90% of Apple iPhone Buyers Extremely Satisfied

The iPhone is probably the most hyped phone ever. But does it live up to the hype? Well, according to a survey of 200 iPhone customers it certainly does. An amazing 90% of the 200 owners were overwhelmingly happy with their iPhone, and 85% would recommend the phone. This is surprising when you consider this is a first generation device and has already been shown to be a bit imperfect in some way.

Apple still faces challenges. The high cost of the two iPhone models — $499 and $599 — ranks as the No. 1 reason consumers interested in the device did not buy one, the survey says. Those consumers said they would pay an average of, at most, $180. I m not surprise if Apple were to come out with a cut down iPhone version to make it affordable afterall even iPod has a range to fulfil the different market segment.

Even though the owners were happy with their new iPhone they certainly didn’t think it was perfect. Top of their wish list was a longer battery life, faster Internet speed and more internal memory.
Some other interesting stats from the survey were:
- 30% of iPhone owners were first time Apple customers.
- 40% said iPhone is their first iPod

So what next? Well there are rumours that the 2nd generation of iPhone will be out in September, but more about that in my future iPhone post.

Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, golden boys of the Formula One circuits, at respectively 26 and 22 years old. The first one drives the Spanish crowds mad, the second one, the British crowds. Both still kids, both already famous, and both in the Mercedes-McLaren team in 2007 - a brilliant opportunity for the German manufacturer that came up with this particularly brilliant advert which is already making a huge buzz on the net. Check out for F1's champ for 2 consecutive in 1998 and 1999, Mika Hakkinen who appeared at the end of the advert. What a great reunion!

An Unofficial Dummies Guide to Using Facebook

I've always been interested in social networking sites like Myspace, Twitter and LinkedIn. But lately, I've been spending quite some time on another social site which I've found to be quite worthy of my time and yours. If you haven't guessed it yet, I'm talking about Facebook. This is a powerful social networking service that you ought to give it a try and I had created a non-exhaustive guide below that will help you to test run Facebook.

So what exactly is Facebook?

FaceBook is a social networking site that allows users to connect and share information. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder, threw up FaceBook while he was a student at Harvard to provide an online avenue for students to find one another. It has since morphed into a social network for everyone. Today, Facebook is built around groups and is made up of many networks, each based around a company, region, high school or college. One reason why it's so popular is because it's just very easy to use. Adding friends, updating your profile, changing your status message - whatever you do takes just minutes.

Facebook didnt stop there, it recently had opened up their API allowing anyone to write software applications that can run in Facebook. So individual software writers can add functionality to Facebook profiles. That's a large audience to get your product in front of, and a great way to spread the word about what you're all about. There are currently in excess of more than 2000 applications that users can sign up to.

How to get started?

1. Sign up and create a Facebook Account

To get started, go to http://www.facebook.com/, click "Register" and fill out a short online registration form. Once you're signed up, you will need to build up a profile of yourself. Beside your profile, you can also include photos, links to your websites or blogs and videos. Its entirely up to you how much information that you want it to be included.

Make sure you include your picture of yourself for your profile afterall its facebook and not No- Facebook! Not having a picture of yourself annoys other Facebook users. How are they supposed to know if you’re the person with that name if you don’t have a picture? So make the effort to upload a clear picture of yourself on the profile page.

- Privacy setting :

Immediately after you sign up and upload a profile picture, head on over to your security settings and decide how secure you want your Facebook profile to be. Hit the My Privacy tab and get familiar with the options. Limited profile viewing, what can be seen by your friends, what can be seen by everyone – familiarize yourself people or don’t panic later when a picture of you kissing or hugging another babe makes it onto your wife or girlfriend’s blog.

2. Find friends and connect with your community

Now that you have a Facebook account, connecting to people in your community is easy. You can start by using the friend invite feature to broadcast your facebook invites to all your friends as facebook supports all popular email providers like Yahoo and Gmail. You can also use the search feature to find friends who are already using Facebook and request to be their friend. You can add just about anyone you can think of. I m sure many of you will be able to discover and locate your long lost friends or schoolmates. Its also an avenue for them to discover you too.

Try and at least get yourself to double digits, and then relax a little and add friends as you come across them during your natural explorations of the site. As a rule of thumb, having fewer than ten friends makes you look either lame or inactive. Its good to develop to a decent number of contacts that you can manage and stay in touch.

3. Send and receive messages

Facebook offers a message board feature called "The Wall" that displays member profile pages. You can use it to post all kinds of messages to your network. But be beware: comments can be viewed by all your contacts in your list of Facebook friends.

Remember your wall is a place for other people to write you notes. When you see someone has written you a note on your wall, you then go to that person’s wall to respond.

4. Upload and share pictures

One of Facebook’s most popular features has been the ability to upload and share pictures. Facebook also offers an unlimited quota with their only restriction being a 60-photos-per-album limit. The process is very simple. Start by creating an album which you can then assign limitations to (e.g. visible to my members only) and upload photos within them. The album is then put into your profile, and other users can see and comment on them. You can also "tag" your photos with the names of people you mention and share the photos via a web link or by e-mail. What’s more is that you can order prints online! Isn't this great.

5. Promote your blog or newsletter

Facebook also helps you to promote your blog or newsletter. This feature allows you to share information beyond what's in your profile in two ways. You can either post a note on your page or import your external blog. It is a nice way to communicate with your constituents and update them on your organization. You can also integrate an RSS feed in to your blog with notes. When you post it, the note is displayed in your profile and every one of your “friends” is notified and other members can add comments.

6. Locating and joining Groups

You’ll find a lot of random groups on Facebook and you should join any that are of interest to you. However, be sure to occasionally prune your groups list. What you thought was cool a month ago may not be now. Additionally, if you’re going to start a group, make sure one doesn’t already exist for the same damn topic please. Be original or bow down to the person who thought of it first.

7. Creating Events

This is likely one of the coolest features. Parties, dinners, etc, you can create an event, invite who you want, make it public or make it private. Under the My Events tab, you can also view past events as well as friend’s public events. This way, if you weren’t one of the kids cool enough to get invited personally, you can barge your way into some free beer at the nearest public events.

8. Accesing Facebook via Mobile

This feature rocks. If you’re on facebook's supported carrier, notifications can be delivered to your mobile phone. However, you can still upload pictures and notes to Facebook from any mobile phone using the designated address and can access a mobile friendly version of Facebook at m.facebook.com.

Harry Potter's Book for RMB 30 aka Made in China Version

Harry Potter might possess the powers to vanquish evil wizards -- but not Chinese pirates.
Bootleg English-language copies of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", J.K. Rowling's latest and last novel in her super-selling series, have been appearing on the streets of Shanghai. This is the testimony to local pirates' ability to churn out copies of any in-demand entertainment in the blink of an eye.

In fact the hawker were trying to sell both the book and the DVD copies of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the newly released film. The softback copy of Rowling's novel, cleanly printed on slightly rough paper, cost RMB 30 (US$ 4) after bargaining while a legitimate copy sells in local bookstores for RMB 210 for a British edition and RMB 218 for the U.S. version. The pirated DVD cost RMB 5 (US$0.70), which is the usual price everybody in Shanghai pays for pirated DVDs.

Most of the buyers were foreigners though as the Chinese people will usually wait for the Chinese version that is due to come out in October.

What does US$207 million in cash looks like

This was what the police found in a luxurious home in Mexico City in March recently, carting off what the police said was $207 million, most of it in $100 bills that had been stashed behind false walls and in closets. The U.S. government called it "the largest single drug cash seizure the world has ever seen."

Guess what, the home belongs to 44-year-old Zhenli Ye Gon, a man from Shanghai, China but lived in Mexico and ran a pharmaceuticals company -- a front, authorities allege, that he supplied Mexican drug cartels with massive quantities of a chemical used to make the street drug methamphetamine.

My Son is doing laundy for the 1st time

My son is finally growing up and now doing laundry for the 1st time. I dont think he would enjoy doing the laundry everyday though but really proud of you son for helping mom out. Time flies so fast, very soon he will be in junior high school and there goes all the hugging and kissing that we are going to get from him. By that time, the only person who will be getting his hugs and kisses will be his girlfriend. Its part of growing up and I miss him so much and cant wait to see my son soon. Well done son and mommy and papa are proud of you.

How many iPhone actually sold?

iPhone’s first weekend didn’t turn out to be as hot as Wall Street analysts had predicted. The sales weren’t 700,000 or 500,000. Or 146,000 for that matter, as AT&T’s results might have indicated. The actual number was somewhere in between.

iPhone was launched on the 29th June and in first 1.25 days Apple sold around 270,000 iPhone, which is pretty impressive for a device that starts at $500. Apple, which announced its fiscal Q3 (ending June 30, 2007) earnings today says that it will shop its millionth iPhone at the end of first full quarter the iPhone has been available.

Still its impressive by any standard for mobile devices. Lets not forget that iPhone has yet to be launched in other countries. I m quite sure that Apple's mission of reaching 10 million iPhone or 1% of the global mobile phone market by the end of 2008 is an achievable objective.
For Q3, Apple posted revenue of $5.41 billion and net quarterly profit of $818 million. These results compare to revenue of $4.37 billion and net quarterly profit of $472 million in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 36.9 percent, up from 30.3 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 40 percent of the quarter's revenue.

What if Microsoft had done the packaging for iPod

The Burj Dubai Becomes the World’s Tallest Building

At 512m (1,680ft) and 141 floors the Burj Dubai, which is still under construction, is now taller than Taiwan’s 508m (1,667ft) Taipei 101 (check out the comparison below). The final height of the Burj is a closely guarded secret with speculation that it will top off at the 800 meter mark (2,625 ft).
When completed, the skyscraper will feature more than 160 floors, 56 elevators, luxury apartments, boutiques, swimming pools, spas, exclusive corporate suites, Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani's first hotel, and a 124th floor observation platform. The $1 billion skyscraper is in the heart of downtown Dubai, a 500-acre development area worth $20 billion. Construction, which began just 1,276 days ago, has been frenzied — at times, one storey rises every three days.

Burj Dubai is certainly setting a new world tallest standard at over 800m. Its going to take a while before some egoistic nation decides to build something taller. Someday we will be able to open our window and touch the cloud with our bare hands.

Top Mobile Sites

Above are latest data from M:Metrics and Madhouse on top mobile sites for US, UK and China. Except the US and China, 5 out of 10 top mobile sites in the UK are dominated by the mobile carriers/operators. While the US list more closely resembles the top www sites list. There are the very consistent top three, Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft (MSN) and only two carrier/operator sites in the US top ten list.

In China, the main carrier site's Monternet is the only carrier site thats occupying the list. The rest are predominantly cut down mobile version of their regular websites with Tencent's QQ taking the lead. Its an old data for 2006 and I reckon that QQ should be the top mobile site by now surpassing China Mobile's Monternet. Whats driving QQ mobile site is their QQ's Instant Messaging software, the same software that had made QQ the top website in China.

The only difference between China and the rest of the world is China has a far more developed mobile ecosystem. They are alot of content providers in China that focus strictly mobile, and you can see from the above graph that few of them are occupying the top slots namely, 3g.cn, Kong.net, Lxyes and 3gpp. They exist mainly on mobile and sometimes it made me wonder whether is there a separate web? The real answer should be no, what do you think? Why should there be any difference between the sites you visit on your pc and mobile? Is it largely driven by what you can and you cant do on your pc or mobile?

China Mobile To Run Mobile Advertising Service

China Mobile (CHL), the largest mobile service provider in China, has taken one step forward to becoming a comprehensive wireless service provider with licensing approval to create and execute its own mobile advertising and marketing services.

Its services will focus on many different patterns of mobile advertising, including sending advertisements to clients' mobile phones through service providers, embedding graphical advertisements on webpages on its own advertising network, providing ringtones, and creating interactive marketing games. It plans to create a comprehensive mobile advertising and marketing division that will allow advertisers to deal directly with it, instead of going through third-party mobile marketing service providers.

I m not sure what China Mobile's overall strategy is on mobile marketing but one thing for sure they are certainly taking serious step to lead and bumping other mobile marketing companies out. Though i m not in line with their current strategy to deal directly with advertisers, China Mobile surely has alot of upper hand as they had proven many times how they had used their iron fist to change the rules of mobile business in China.

Industrial & Commercial Bank of China is the World Largest Bank

China is becoming so big in many ways and in a fresh sign of China's financial strength, a leap in the shares of Industrial & Commercial Bank of China yesterday made it the world's biggest bank by market capitalization, overtaking U.S. giant Citigroup Inc.

ICBC's Shanghai-listed A shares climbed 2.68 per cent to 5.75 yuan (76 cents U.S.), giving it a market capitalization of US$254-billion. That exceeded the $251-billion capitalization of Citigroup, previously the world's biggest bank, when its shares closed at $50.73 in New York on Friday. HSBC Holdings was in third place with $215-billion.

The pace is so fast in China, it will be very soon that many large Chinese companies will play a very dominant role in the global economy. Well done China.

Latest Chinese Subscribers Data for June 2007

China Mobile hit a new high with 5.526 million new users and the company's total user population increased to 332 million.

China Unicom increased 1.537 million users during the same month, of which 1.133 million were GSM users and 404,000 were CDMA users. By the end of June, China Unicom had a total user population of 151.63 million. China Telecom saw a net increase of 210,000 users and China Netcom 77700 new users.

The difference in new user increases show that mobile services have become more popular than fixed-line services.

Interpublic going mobile marketing

Interpublic, the global marketing communications group, has launched Ansible, a new independent agency specializing in mobile marketing. Ansible, which IPG created in conjunction with the mobile technology vendor Velti, was born out of the agency holding company''s recently launched Futures Marketing Group.

IPG has tapped Vladimir Edelman, the former head of the mobile marketing firm Soapbox Media and veteran of CBS, ESPN Fox and others, as Ansible''s first chief executive officer. In addition, Larry Harris, the former executive vp, director of integrated marketing for Draftfcb, has signed on as the agency''s new president.

Ansible, which will be based in New York, will work with IPG clients from its agencies across the globe, according to officials, who say that mobile is becoming even more of a priority for marketers.

Mobile is a crucial medium that increasingly bridges traditional media channels to provide fully integrated client solutions. With Interpublic, Aegis, AOL and Microsoft taking position in mobile marketing, its becoming clear that mobile marketing will form an important part of the overall marketing mix strategy for any global communication companies and brand owners. Even China Mobile has applied for an independent advertising license in China to offer comprehensive mobile marketing services directly to its clients cutting out middle man.

There is certainly no stopping mobile marketing taking prime time both in China and on a Global scale. The road ahead for mobile marketing is rosier than ever though I must say that there are still alot of work that needs to be done before it can be a prime media. Without proper measurement to measure the success of any mobile marketing campaigns and the proper mobile media metrics, its unlikely that mobile marketing providers will get the traction that they need. It will still take some time for such measurements and metrics to be developed and alot of standardization process that industry players need to work on.

Whatever it maybe, mobile marketing is definitely in for the long haul and industry players need to work hand in hand to develop it into a mature media. Its going to be exciting to see how all the global operators embracing mobile marketing and how far are they willing to open up their users' database. As far as China is concern, I dont reckon China Mobile would want to open up at this present moment. We just have to wait until China gets its 3G licenses and hopefully with more operators, China Mobile is forced to play ball.

The New Apple's Zippo'd iPod

Unfortunately, the Zippo’d Lighter / iPod is a fake. But the rising trend is that brand obsession with iPod is driving rogue research and development across the web. There are literally hundreds of fake iPod inventions almost every single one of it is Made in China. You can buy one for about US$30 in China.

162 million internet users in China

Latest stats from China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) as of June 30, 2007 :

- 162 million internet users, an increase of 31.7 percent year-on-year.
- ranked no 2, behind USA who has 211 million internet users.
- mobile internet users had grown to 44.3 million users.
- Netizens spend more time searching for online music, videos and games compared with Internet-based job-seeking, education, shopping, travel ticketing and bank services.
- Most users are unmarried young people under the age of 25, with a monthly income less than 1,500 yuan (US$197).
- cn domain registration has reached 6.13 million.
- Over 37% users, increased from 32.3%, access Internet in Internet cafe.
- IM is more important in China than email for communication. More netizens use IM than email (69.8% vs. 55.4%), while over 90% Internet users use email in US. IM usage rate is even higher (74.6%) among users under age 25, while the email usage rate is only 46.6% among them.
- Online entertainment is the most important demand for Chinese youths under age 25, with 91.4% of them used online music, 79.6%% used online movies, and 67.1% played online games.

Build a powerful Presentation Steve Job's way

Creating PowerPoint presentation is what a lot of us do regularly, whether we are pitching for an account or introducing a new range of products or showcasing a business proposition. Over the years I had prepared and seen many presentations but I must admit most of them are either mediocre or just abount average. You will know whats a good presentation when you see and hear one. A lot of hard work and practise goes into preparing the best presentation.

Here are few methods to distill Steve Jobs' speaking techniques to help anyone craft and deliver a persuasive pitch.

1. Build Tension
A good novelist doesn't lay out the entire plot and conclusion on the first page of the book. He builds up to it. Jobs begins his presentation by reviewing the "revolutionary" products Apple has introduced. According to Jobs, "every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything…Apple has been fortunate to introduce a few things into the world." Jobs continues by describing the 1984 launch of the Macintosh as an event that "changed the entire computer industry." The same goes for the introduction of the first iPod in 2001, a product that he says "changed the entire music industry."

After laying the groundwork, Jobs builds up to the new device by teasing the audience: "Today, we are introducing three revolutionary products. The first is a wide-screen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary new mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications device." Jobs continues to build tension. He repeats the three devices several times then says, "Are you getting it? These are not three separate devices. This is one device…today Apple is going to reinvent the phone!" The crowd goes wild.

Jobs conducts a presentation like a symphony, with ebbs and flows, buildups and climaxes. It leaves his listeners wildly excited. The takeaway? Build up to something unexpected in your presentations.

2. Stick to One Theme Per Slide
A brilliant designer once told me that effective presentation slides only have one message per slide. One slide, one key point. When Jobs introduced the "three revolutionary products" in the description above, he didn't show one slide with three devices. When he spoke about each feature (a widescreen iPod, a mobile phone, and an Internet communicator), a slide would appear with an image of each feature.

Jobs also makes the slides highly visual. At no place in his presentation does the audience see slides with bullet points or mind-numbing data. An image is all he needs. The simplicity of the slides keeps the audience's attention on the speaker, where it should be. Images are memorable, and more important, can complement the speaker. Too much text on a slide distracts from the speaker's words. Prepare slides that are visually stimulating and focused on one key point.

3. Add Pizzazz to Your Delivery
Jobs modulates his vocal delivery to build up the excitement. When he opens his presentation by describing the revolutionary products Apple created in the past, his volume is low and he speaks slowly, almost in a reverential tone. His volume continues to build until his line, "Today Apple is going to reinvent the phone." Be an electrifying speaker by varying the speed at which you speak and by raising and lowering your voice at the appropriate times.

4. Practice
Jobs makes presentations look effortless because he takes nothing for granted. Jobs is known to rehearse demonstrations for hours prior to launch events. I can name many high-profile chief executives who decide to wing it. It shows. It always amazes me that many business leaders spend tens of thousands of dollars on designing presentations, but next to no time actually rehearsing. I usually get the call after the speaker bombs. Don't lose your audience. Rehearse a presentation out loud until you've nailed it.

5. Be Honest and Show Enthusiasm
If you believe that your particular product or service will change the world, then say so. Have fun with the content. During the iPhone launch, Jobs uses many adjectives to describe the new product, including "remarkable," "revolutionary," and "cool." He jokes that the touch-screen features of the phone "work like magic…and boy have we patented it."

I think speakers are so afraid of over-hyping a product that they go to the opposite extreme and make their presentations boring. If you're passionate about a product, service, or company, let your listeners know. Give yourself permission to loosen up, have fun, and express your enthusiasm!

The audience who were made up of representatives from their respective countries were practically glued to their seats and paying close attention to what she has to say. She starts to make me think of how i can make this world a better place too. I m definitely not capable to change the world and make it better place for all of us, but i can surely do enough within my capacity to improve something which i havent been doing enough all this while and so can you!

How to get to the Top of Google Search for FREE

I’m a big fan of using LinkedIN to establish new networking relationships for business. LinkedIN had both created opportunity for me in China and expanded my business networking in the shortest period. Its really a free service for starter and I cant see why you are not maximizing your presence on LinkedIN afterall its your NEW Resume too like your blog. A good presence on LinkedIN will get you almost to the top of Google Search when anybody search for your online profile. If you search for my name "Alvin Foo" on Google, you will see that i m listed 2nd.

I don’t stick to the rule of knowing the other people deeply and personally before reaching out. Sometimes, I send invites to people who are in my field, that I know from around the news, but who aren’t personal friends or contacts. Yet. So suffice to say, I spend a lot of time on LinkedIn.

I’ve noticed that not all profiles are created equal. Some lack easy ways to connect to the person. Others are really incomplete. Here’s what I think you might consider doing and why;

1. Add your email address to your last name- For someone to connect to you without directly knowing you, they need to present your first and last name, as well as a valid email address. Make it easier by turning the last name field of your profile into your last name and then your email address (example: Alvin(linkedin@myemail.com)). This gives folks an easier path to connecting.

2. Fill out your profile- First, some people search profiles for keywords, so make sure the words you hope people are seeking when they think of you exist inside your profile. Use real captivating words up front, not like a resume or CV, but instead, like an advertisement for you, because that’s what LinkedIN is!

3. Solicit colleagues and friends for recommendations- People love to read reviews. We do it for books at Amazon. We do it for movies at IMDB or Netflix. Make sure you’ve got some great recommendations for the world you’ve performed. Don’t be afraid to solicit recommendations. I’ve run little campaigns where I offer a recommendation in return for every one written about me. That stacked up fast. The trick is: write what you truly feel about the person in the nicest possible terms, and never oversell someone you don’t recommend. That can come back to bite you.

4. Add plenty of passion- People who are going to bother to read your profile want to know what makes you tick. If you merely put down that you’re an operations manager at a mid-tier tech company, that’s all they have in their minds about you. Add that you’re passionate about Greek wines and that you take Improv class weekly in Dubai. Make sure people know about YOU, not just your job history.

5. Ask and answer questions- Using the Answers feature brings your name and profile around to people you’re not exposed to directly. This means more opportunities for someone to recognize your authority in some field, and to reach out and contact you for something further. It means sharing the fruits of your networking with others, and potentially connecting 3rd parties to each other for something bigger. This comes in handy when it becomes obvious that you’re also a good connector.

The trick of it all is that you get out of LinkedIN what you put in. If you throw up a profile that roughly covers the details, and barely populates the profile with much of interest, you’ll likely not get connections beyond former coworkers looking to hitch their debris to yours. Should you be seeking to cast a net, develop relationships, and eventually find other opportunities through LinkedIN, you’ll want to put a little more effort into the site.

iPhone Killer - The $300 Open Source Linux-Powered Mobile Phone

The OpenMoko mobile phone is here. The first version of the NEO 1973 mobile phone, which carries the Linux kernel inside and is not locked to a specific network, is available for purchase from OpenMoko.com. It's not as sexy as the iPhone, but it shares a design philosophy -- no buttons, just a screen -- and it's ready to be loaded with any number of open-source software applications.

The base version of the NEO sells for $300. It has a 2.8" VGA touch screen, a micro SD card slot, a USB port and 2.5G GSM quad band capability.

Keep in mind that this unit (the GTA01) was pushed out early so developers could begin writing device drivers, custom GUIs and some cool apps for the phone. The next revision (GTA02), which will be available starting at $450 in October, will be ready for the mass market. It will have wi-fi, 3-D motion sensors and added graphics accelerators. So this phone isn't exactly an iPhone killer -- the next one maybe a contender.
When it comes to devices, more choice is almost always "a good thing." But will consumers respond to the NEO? We all know developers are going to dig this phone. The main feature of the Neo 1973 is openness. All the hardware is documented, and the software is open source. This contrasts greatly with the iPhone which is as closed as a bank vault. The only way to develop software on iPhone is to build web services designed to fit well on the screen or to use javascript with limited access to the iPhone resources.
Personally this is really a mobile device for the geeks and I dont reckon that its in the same league as the iPhone. Consumers arent going after technology, they know little about technology let alone open source linux, its all down to design and user interface and thats where iPhone fits in nicely. And if you think the iPhone is a little pricey, you may want to wait for the new version Nano-based iPhone as Apple plans to launch a cheaper version of the iPhone in the fourth quarter that could be based on the ultra-slim iPod Nano music player, according to a JP Morgan report.

Blog is my new resume and it should be yours too. Whenever anyone wants to know anything about me I send them here. This immediately brings several things to bear:

1. Your blog represents you.

Your blog is speaking for you to folks who might not know anything about you. Is it saying the right thing? is it saying the same thing you would say if you met someone for the first time?

2. Your blog is serious business.

It has the power to completely sway someone’s opinion about you. It fulfills the needs of lurkers everywhere who Google you to see what kind of person you are. Show them your best. (if you’re looking for work this is extremely important)

3. You blog is an archive.

Your blog is an archive of your life that has its effects over time. What you write today will be there a year from now.

4. Your blog isn’t the only mirror of your life.

Folks are getting savvy to the places that people are building online. Your facebook account, MySpace account, LinkedIn profile, Flickr set…all of these represent you, too. Make sure not that they paint you in an unfailing light, but that they represent you accurately. The best defense is truthfulness…be sure to always be truthful about yourself and everything will fall into place.

5. Your blog is your unedited version of yourself.

Your blog is what you say when there is nobody standing over your shoulder telling you what to do. It demonstrates how you think outside the rules. It is one of the very few places where you have complete editorial control. Don’t take that for granted.

It’s OK that you don’t have a blog. But realize that you’re competing with many folks who do…and that’s only going to get harder over time. So, if you can, start one. Give it a try afterall its free and believe me, once you start, you would never be able to stop like me.

China's Car Sales Up 26% First Half of This Year

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced that car sales in the middle kingdom were up 25.9% over last year.

- 2.29 million cars were sold - up 22.3%
- 107,000 MPVs (multipurpose vehicles) were sold - up 12.9%
- 158,000 SUVs were sold - up 39.3%

The best sellers were:
1. Santana
2. Jetta
3. Excelle
4. Camry
5. QQ

The top carmakers were:
1. FAW Volkswagen
2. Shanghai Volkswagen
3. Chery
4. Dongfeng-Nissan
5. Guangzhou Honda

Looks like China is taking on the shape of America while in the US, GM, FORD and DaimlerChrysler continue to restructure.

iPhone - 10 things you need to know before buying the iPhone

Although Apple's iPhone may be feature-packed and great to use, it, like every other product, has limitations. Here are the Ten Things You Should Know Before You Buy an iPhone.

1) Not all iPod Accessories and headphones will work with the iPhone: Unless your accessory specifically claims that it works with the iPhone, you're going to have mixed results when you plug in. Some work (but prompt you to turn on Airplane mode), some don't. So far our test show good results.

As for headphones, if you've got an L-shaped plug or a fat plug, you're out of luck. Thanks to the recessed headphone jack, you're going to actually have to buy an adapter to get some of your regular headphones to work with the iPhone.

2) Married to AT&T for 2 years : You know this. Being stuck on AT&T for two years is going to be horrible. Plus, their reception and customer service leave a lot to be desired.

3) No video recording or MMS: The iPhone's 2-megapixel camera is great if there's enough light, but there's no video recording at all. None. This is odd, since the iPhone has so much video playback capabilities in its iPod "app," but don't expect to make movies with this thing. And since you can't record video, you can't send any video messages (MMS) either.

4) No Instant Messaging. (You can try Meebo though)
5) Not for business use: BlackBerry enthusiasts need not apply. In addition to the keyboard being totally different, there's no push email except for Yahoo Mail. There is Exchange support, but it's just using IMAP access.

6) It's not a full iPod Replacement, and it has no games: With 4GB or 8GB of storage, this is essentially an iPod nano. It's definitely not an iPod Video, both in terms of storage and functionality. You can watch videos, sure, but there's no TV out, and not nearly enough room to keep all the TV shows and podcasts you keep downloading. Plus, all those 5G iPod games that you thought were going to make it onto the iPhone? Nope. No games at all.
7) It's not a smartphone: As much as Apple wants you to think their "open application development" using webapps is actual apps, it's not. You can get some stuff done using webapps and Safari, but as of right now, support sucks. Until people start developing apps specifically customized for the iPhone's quirks, you won't be doing anything super fancy.
8) The data connection is slow: Although the iPhone has both EDGE and Wi-Fi, you're probably going to be using EDGE most of the time. Why? Because if you're in Wi-Fi range, you're usually at home or at work, when you've got an actual computer in front of you. When you're outside driving or walking, you'll be on EDGE. If you're on EDGE, expect emails with large attachments and Web pages to download slowly.
9) There's no GPS: The iPhone may have a Google Maps application with turn by turn driving directions, but there's no actual GPS in there. You're going to have find your current location yourself, plus tell the phone exactly when you're turning. Like the data connection, a software update can't fix this.

10) There are no custom ringtones: You can't use your own ringtones (whether they're MP3s, downloaded music, or iTunes tracks) as ringtones for your phone.
As you can see, the iPhone has caveats galore and if any of the other features are important to you, you may have to wait until iPhone 2.0. iPhone is a sexy device and I m confident that the next generation of iPhone will resolve most of the limitations mentioned above. For a first timer in mobile device development, I must say Apple certainly had shaked up the mobile phone industry.

Diagonal Crossing in China

Its probably the 1st of its kind in the world where you will find people crossing diagonally on a major street in China. I have experienced it numerous times doing this and definitely save alot of walking and time too. Usually this will be guided by the traffic officer who will signal us when to cross.
The intersection point of Hangzhou's Yanan road and Ping Hai has recently been updated with a pair of diagonal zebra crossings, which is the probably the first of its kind in China. Without this new system, one would normally walk in a path of 7 with 2 traffic lights to reach the diagonal end point, taking about 28 to 49 seconds. By using the diagonal zebra crossing, one would only require about 20 seconds.

"My Life as McDull (麥兜故事)" is the most successful Hong Kong animated feature film so far, which was released in 2001. McDull, the pink cartoon pig character, became very popular in China since then. Chinese girl auctioning her breasts for charity

China is a country thats so divest and you can practically discover any possibilities and guess what I had discovered a chinese girl trying to auction her breasts to the highest bidder. Taken from Shanghai Daily and really baffled me why would somebody wants to buy Xu Haojia's breasts. The 1.64-meter-tall girl said she weighs 54 kilograms and that her measurements were 85cm, 72cm and 88cm. She added that she wears an E-cup bra.

At first Xu seemed like just another Chinese chick trying her luck to be the next internet fame, but it turns out that our dear, overweight, E-cup Xu is literally auctioning her breasts. As in, she will have them surgically removed, and will literally hand her removed breasts over to the highest bidder.

I m sure this is definitely a stunt Xu is trying to pull to make herself famous afterall its her dream to become a celebrity. Whatever the outcome, I wish Xu all the best and hope she gets what she wants and I m definitely not bidding for her breasts. APPLE Stock Hitting an All time high

After a 30-percent overall increase in the months leading up to the iPhone release, Apple’s stock has continued to climb since last Friday. They’ve now hit their all-time high stock price, trading for as much as $132.97 on Nasdaq. Apple Intraday Chart (5th July 2007)

Tuesday Apple’s stock was $122, Wednesday the markets were closed, and Thursday the stock’s up to $132. Incredible. Lets not forget that 52 weeks ago, Apple was only trading at a mere US$50. Investors certainly have a lot of faith in Apple and Steve Jobs and team at Apple deserves all the credits with the current performance of Apple and I expect the stock price of Apple will continue to skyrocket in view that iPhone has yet to widen its iPhone's U.S. distribution to electronics retailers, including Best Buy and markets outside the US.

BlackBerry coming to China

Its been a long 8 years wait for Research in Motion (RIM), the manufacturer of the successful BlackBerry mobile device. They had finally been given the clearance to bring BlackBerry to China. RIM expects to start selling the products by the end of next month and had already received 5000 advanced orders.

I dont reckon that BlackBerry will enjoy the similar success in China like in the US as the usage of emails in China isnt as critical as those in the US but i m sure BlackBerry will have a niche and captive market of its own.

With iPhone coming to the market soon, I will surely make a pass for the BlackBerry and wait for the iPhone afterall iPhone can handle phone calls, email, Web browsing, music and videos. With the iPhone, I cant see any compelling reason for buying the BlackBerry.

iPhone vs Nokia N95

Nokia's Bill Plummer Talks iPhone on CNBC.

We've known the Nokia N95 to be the "iPhone Killer" for quite some time now. Whether iPhone fanatics want to believe it or not as I had also previously blogged it before.

Nokia's N95 which was announced in September of 2006 has all the features and then some of what the iPhone will offer, BUT, Nokia has honestly covered the market on it 1st. Even though they haven't put out the marketing and advertising hoopla that Apple is known for, Nokia fans and consumers are well aware of the N95.

Bill Plummer, Nokia's VP in charge of Multimedia North America, sat down with Becky Quick of CNBC to share the details of what the N95 is all about. Click here for the Video Link.
The panel at CNBC was trying really hard to get Bill to make disparaging remarks on the iPhone and I must say that Bill handled it well and believe it or not, through out the interview, Bill didnt even mention iPhone. Its all in the name of good PR afterall it can be foolish to make such disparaging statement and having to swallow it back later like what Steve Balmer has to say about iPhone months ago.
Personally i m a big fan of both Apple and Nokia. They are great companies and had developed revolutionary products but for this round, I must give it to Apple. Apple may had got into the mobile play late but I must admit they surely know how to develop great products with great user experience like the iPod and now the iPhone. I wonder why has it taken such a long time for the other giant mobile phone manufacturers to do what Apple had done with the iPhone. Apple had certainly set a new standard in the design of mobile phones and this is going to be exciting for consumers as we are all going to be the beneficiaries of better mobile phones to come in the future.

iPhone - 700,000 sold in the 1st weekend

700,000 iPhones sold in the 1st weekend and surely surpassed all analyst predictions and shattered AT&T's record by selling more iPhones in three days than Motorola's RAZR did in its first month. Apple's supply of iPhones depleted at more than half of its retail stores less than a week after the cellular handset hit shelves at 6:00 p.m. ET last Friday night. American Technology Research predicts that the iPhone would likely be AT&T’s fastest ever selling product and that the iPhone could rank among the fastest selling consumer electronics devices of all time.

Based on the cost of manufacturing an iPhone (post July 2), Apple would have made a profit of between $200million and $266 million in 3 days (not including marketing costs), on sales somewhere between $350million and $420million, significantly more than earlier estimates of Apple having a $300million weekend.

Its an amazing sell out and definitely had lived up to the hypes from the day it was announced. I wonder what Steve Balmer of Microsoft would have to say about his earlier comments about the iPhone especially when he commented the iPhone for being the most expensive mobile phone in the world. Eat your heart out Steve.

Bill Gates no longer the richest man in the world

Bill Gates is no longer the richest man in the world. It really is the end of an era after staying at the top of the league for the last 13 years.

Carlos Slim, owner of a Mexican wireless telecommunications company American Movil, has been cited as the man that’s taken Bill Gates top spot. American Movil has seen a 27% surge in stock price during the second quarter, pushing Slim’s worth to a reported $67.8 billion. As the world’s fifth largest wireless telecommunications provider, and Latin America’s most prominent wireless telecommunications provider, the company has seen solid growth and its stock has been considered to be a good bet for some time now. The fast growing wireless market in Latin America has a lot to do with American Movil’s ability to sustain such growth and a healthy stock price.

No matter where Bill is positioned on the World Richest list, Bill has certainly placed himself among the few who had revolutionised the technology industry especially in the area of software. He will definitely continue to be in the limelight for his contribution to the technology and internet industry and not forgetting his humanitarian contribution via his huge charitable giveaway. Truly a living legend from my perspective.

Mobile Advertising Attitudes

MoMac, the leading mobile media publisher, has announced the results of its first Mobile Advertising Attitudes report, supporting the launch of its GoSell mobile ad campaign management tool.

MoMac’s research, conducted by independent research agency Tickbox, clearly emphasises the need for mobile advertising to match specific audience requirements. Results from different demographics indicate that responsiveness to different kinds of advertising changes according to age and gender, giving brands and marketers valuable guidelines around which to design their mobile advertising campaigns.

The Mobile Advertising Attitudes Report surveyed a cross section of 1,400 UK mobile phone users during May 2007.

Advertising Formats
Despite the fact that mobile advertising is in its infancy, the report reveals that as many as 13% of 16-24s have already responded to or clicked-on a mobile advert. Given the limited inventory currently available for mobile advertising, and the relative rarity of mobile users being served mobile ads, the figures show the potential for a significant future take-up – if the communication is delivered in the right way.

When it comes to mobile advertising formats, MoMac’s research shows clear differences in the preferences of men and women and the different demographic groups. When on mobile sites, text based advertising links are the most popular (56%) with a clear female bias of 60% compared to just 47% of men. Picture or banner-based advertising was the second most popular option, favoured by 29% overall and just under one in three 25-34 year olds. Interestingly, video based advertising has a strong male bias with 22% of men compared to just 12% of women stating they would be most likely to respond to a video advert. Video formats were also more popular with younger mobile users selected by 23% of 16-24s but only 12% of the over 55s.

The research results also indicate that content providers will need to consider a number of payment models to appeal to the diverse groups of mobile users in the UK looking for content. The ad-funded model could become dominant with younger mobile users, with 47% of 16 to 24s preferring to access content for free in exchange for viewing advertising. Only 32% of this group opted for a pay-as-you-download (PAYD) model and only 3.9% stated they would want to pay for content via a subscription. In contrast the PAYD method is more popular with older mobile users, with 55% of those aged 45 and older opting to pay for content on demand, and also appeals more to women, with 54% choosing PAYD compared to 41% of men who are more open to advertising.

GoSellMomac’s research was conducted as part of the preparation for the launch of its new GoSell mobile advertising platform. A number of recent acquisitions (including AOL’s purchase of Third Screen Media and Microsoft’s purchase of Screen Tonic) have added impetus to mobile advertising’s move to the mainstream, with research house Strategy Analytics predicting mobile ad revenues to be as high as $14.4billion by 2011.
